The City

Nestled under a ring of wooded hills, it sweeps down onto the Mediterranean and boasts no less than 8km of sandy beaches. From its beautifully preserved medieval heart to its modern cutting edge architecture, Barcelona is every bit a great European capital, as you are sure to notice whether strolling the broad, tree-lined avenues of l'Eixample or walking the meandering, cobbled pedestrian streets of the Barri Gothic and Raval.

Barcelona is a city that fairly bristles with activity, owing much of it's current prosperity to the generations who came before. One of the Mediterranean's oldest and busiest ports, it was once the hub of a great commercial empire that included the Balearics and part of Greece, boasting a long history of business endeavour. It continues today to be home to many of the leaders in Spain's developing economy.

Culture

Culture is everywhere. Possessing an embarrassment of museum riches, and an abundance of historical buildings, palaces and churches, Barcelona is a city that fires the imagination of historians and art-lovers the world over. Every year, there are a range of different events and spectacles on offer, more than enough to satisfy almost every taste. Opera, ballet and great classical performances are a year round option, with venues like the Gran Teatre del Liceu and Palau de la Música worth visiting simply for their own splendour. Combined with ongoing street theatre and open air rock concerts, plus a variety of Jazz festivals and every conceivable style of Spanish, Catalan and Latin music and dance, all this gives the Barcelona nights their own distinct musical flavour.

Any city that is so rich in new architectural design, and decorative use of Art Nouveau will attract the best creators and designers in Europe, and so it is with Barcelona: musicians, dancers, cinematographers and directors, actors, architects, photographers, and painters have flocked here to seek inspiration amid the city's energetic, colourful and happy inhabitants, bringing with them their own unique energies and rhythms to add to the mix.

Athome Barcelona Apartments also provides a monthly guide to what's happening in the city containing updates on new exhibitions in the main museums and galleries alongside the best in pop, rock, jazz, blues and classical music to choose from. This is available as an rss feed on our homepage. Check Barcelona Monthy Events Guide to see what's happening in Barcelona this month!

Climate

What can you say? Barcelona is blessed with an ideal climate, it's summers can be very hot from the end of July to the start of September, yet nothing as bad as the near-African swelter of it's neighbours to the south. It is almost always sunny, and it isn't unusual to see sunbathers catching rays on the beaches in winter.

Getting Around

Fortunately, Barcelona is not as big as most other major European cities, which makes it a pleasure to explore on foot, as long as you slow your pace to fit that of the locals. In fact, areas like the Barri Gothic can't really be enjoyed any other way. Walking around the narrow, sometimes cobbled, streets where much of the architecture is obviously medieval, you feel a sense of the city's ancient history. With great foresight, over the years, each new generation of Catalunyans has striven to continuously improve their urban infrastructure and develop their architecture without destroying their rich heritage. This has lead to modern architectural innovation expanding comfortably amidst the many beautiful remnants and buildings that speak of the city's great past. When walking about, keep in mind that a block in l'Eixample is approx 100m sq.

Not many cities can boast of a mass public transit system that is as cheap, clean and efficient as the TMB. The metro covers virtually every part of the city, and is quick and easy to use. The best pass or travel card to buy is the T10. This is a 10 journey pass, it is transferable which means that more than one person can use it at the same time, it costs a little over 6 Euro, and it can be used virtually across the board, on the metro, buses, night buses, trams and local trains travelling in zone 1. All the city is in zone 1, including the airport. The metro is open from 5am until midnight on weekdays, and from 5am until 2am at the weekends and days before holidays. There are night buses which run throughout the night, and there are always taxis to be found - though between 2 and 4am on the weekend there are more people looking for them. A green light on the roof of the taxi shows that it is available.
