Showing until mid May at the CCCB is an exhibition entitled Illuminaciones: Visionary Catalunya, an historical journey through Barcelona's role as a cultural hub in Europe, and how the rest of world perceives Catalunya. Different themes are explored here, from Dali and art to scociety and political history, including the important role played by Catalunya during the Spanish Civil War.
Showing at MACBA is the exhibition I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore by Thomas Bayrle, considered to be one of the leading representatives of the reception of the Pop movement in Germany. According to MACBA's own release -'The importance of formulating a new phenomenology of the experience of historical time is the core of Thomas Bayrle's work, as well as of this project, especially created for the MACBA. This is a fundamental subject in the context of an institution in which the interest in the temporary, in the history of art and the collective memory coexist with the desire to maintain the currency of a commitment to understand and seize the meaning of living in and from the present.'- The exhibition will remain open until April.
Showing until the 15th of this month at CaixaForum is an exhibition simply entitled Engravings by Thirteen Great Artists, which shows 42 works by thirteen internationally-renowned, contemporary artists like Antoni Tàpies, Robert Motherwell, Eduardo Chillida, Edward Ruscha and Jaume Plensa who produce innovative and sculpturally-powerful works, using copperplate engraving techniques. The collection is organised according to the three basic concepts of engraving: symbol, space and time.
Palau Robert is showing an exhibition of photography by photographer Mariona Giner entitled Mariona Giner: Retrats de família which opens a window on Gypsy culture and traditions in Catalan, Sevillan and English communities, and the links between them. It is part of their Photographer's Window and will show until April.
Continuing at Fundació Arqueològica Clos, Barcelona's Egyptian Museum, until the end of June is Sick Skeletons. With over 130 skeletons and human remains, this exhibition shows the wide range of illnesses and ailments suffered by our ancestors, and brings together artefacts from over 30 institutions from around the world which span a timeline from prehistory to relatively modern times. Congenital and degenerative disorders, infections, tumours, and traumas and injuries caused by violence, among other things, are all explored here.
Over at the Casa Amèrica Catalunya the 50th anniversary of the Cuban revolution is being marked by an exhibition entitled Cuba Mía which leads viewers through the early years of Castro's regime, and features 80 black-and-white photographs taken in 1964 by the Mexican photographer Rodrigo Moya. This is the first time such images have been shown to the public and they include a dozen photographs taken of Ernesto Che Guevara in his office when he was Minister of Industry.
El Feile returns for its 6th and biggest edition yet and includes an expansive programme of contemporary Arts and sport spread across 10 days with events in Barcelona, as well as San Sebastian, Madrid, Bilbao. In Barcelona you can catch folk and traditional legends, The Dubliners at L'Auditori on the 11th. The same venue plays host to John McSherry & At First Light on the 13th, while over at Sala Apolo the same night punk rock legends Stiff Little Fingers play their first ever concert in Barcelona. The following night, at the same venue, you can catch Dale Grundle's latest project The Sleeping Years, a must for fans of Nick Drake, Elliot Smith and John Martyn. Finally on the 19th at Sala Apolo 2, there's a chance to see rising star Duke Special ably supported by The Subterranean Kids. The full schedule is available at www.elfeile.com
The Giggling Guiri shifts from the Cafe Teatre Llantiol to Teatro C.A. Tradicionarius as part of El Feile, where comedy fans will be entertained by Northern Irelander Colin Murphy. He plays on the 15th, doors open at 7.30pm, and once again you can be certain that tickets for this are going to sell out well before the event, so book in advance to avoid disappointment. Visit www.comedyinspain.com for prices and curtain times.
With just 13 games to go, La Liga is getting tight and FC Barcelona's lead over rivals Real Madrid has been cut to 4 points. They play at home three times this month, facing Atletic Bilbao on the 7th and Malaga on the 22nd. They also have a crucial Champions League match on the 11th against French champions, Lyon, and will hope that their away goal will be enough to see them through to the quarter finals. Meanwhile, find themselves in serious danger of relegation, just one point off the bottom and 4 points from safety, despite having beat Barcelona last month. They face opposition at home on the 15th, against Mallorca.
