Showing until the second of November 2nd, the CCCB presents the exhibition JG Ballard - Autopsy of the New Millennium, dedicated to an author many consider one of the most important and intelligent voices in contemporary fiction. This exhibition presents a journey into Ballard's creative universe: his themes and obsessions, his dissection of contemporary life, his artistic and literary references and his precise and disenchanted intuitions of a future life ruled by the concepts of asceptic anti-utopia and catastrophe.
Currently showing at Caixaforum is an exhibition entitled Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939): Seduction, Modernity and Utopia which aims to provide an in-depth review of the artist's work. Mucha was one of the main creative forces behind the Art Nouveau style, one which he used to perfection in developing his highly effective iconography, an essential element in the birth of modern advertising. His fame was mainly based on his theatrical, advertising and decorative posters, usually depicting intriguing women. His relationship with celebrated actress Sarah Bernhardt didn't hurt his reputation either.
Showing at CCCB from the 1st until the 5th, and now in its 8th edition, Docúpolis has established itself as the major documentary film festival in Europe. Over 100 documentaries from 5 different continents will be shown at this year’s event, offering a rich and varied sample of works from around the world. This year’s country retrospective focuses on Mexico. 6 documentaries will be screened, exploring the different aspects of the country, with themes including everything from legendary political figures to complex social movements. The International Documentary Competition will also take place during event, with films from more than 70 countries competing in four different categories.
espai [b] is a contemporary art gallery which opened its doors in 2003, in the gracia neighbourhod, to promote different forms of contemporary art, with special attention on new artists, alernating their exhibitions with the more established. The gallery's latest exhibition, Jessica Von Helmot - Biological Process runs until the 11th of October.
Showing at Siesta Gallery from the 14th of this month is an exhibition featuring the work of Mercedes Rodrigo and Sebas Brau. Mercedes Rodrigo’s paintings are structures designed with a theatrical character; the work expresses itself in an instant, with a clear synthesis which gets us involved and leads us to investigate the entire scene. Light is a key tool used to bring us closer to the various details of her work.
Sebas Brau’s sculptures are organised as human figures in various states of movement and tension. Their actions are difficult and defiant, as if in an impulsive act they deal with the uncertainty of change. Or so it says here.
Comedy fans will want to get themselves down to the perfectly intimate Cafè Teatre Llantiol on the 11th to catch the irreverent Craig Hill who returns to the Giggling Guiri after his successful stint at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Visit www.comedyinspain.com for prices and curtain times, but book early as this show will sell out.
Beginning on the 23rd of this month, and running until the end of November, the Barcelona International Jazz Festival will feature a variety of jazz, big band, bebop, gospel and Latin-jazz concerts at venues across the city, including the Palau de la Música Catalana, Bikini and L'Auditori. This year the event celebrates its 40th anniversary with a top line-up including Al Green, Katie Melua, Mariza, Bebo y Chucho Valdés, the Herbie Hancock Sextet and the Matthew Herbert Big Band. You can find details of all concerts at their website www.theproject.es .Maybe, from previous experience this site is slow to be updated, and their pretense at having an English section is almost laughable. Still, maybe this year...
There's plenty of other live music events to choose from at venues throughout the city this month. The visitors include such big names as Bryan Adams, Paul Weller, Queen with Paul Rodgers, The Wailers, Ten Years, After, and Grandmaster Flash, as well as Amaral, Elephant Man, The Posies, Fall Out Boy, Kevin Johansen, Porcupine Tree, In Flames, Amy McDonald, The Wildhearts, Mala Rodriguez, Ani di Franco, The Wombats, Sun Kil Moon, The Quireboys, Wayne Hussey, dEUS, Ladytron, M-Clan, and Thee Silver Mount Zion. As usual, everything you need to know can be found at www.barcelonarocks.com
With the football season now in full flow, FC Barcelona play at home twice this month beginning with a tasty game against a very good Atletico side on the 4th, and a game against minnows Almeria on the weekend of the 25th/26th. Espanyol, recovering from their mugging by Barcelona and FCB's pet referee, have only one home game this month, against league leaders Vila Real to be played on the 19th.
