What's on in Barcelona, Events Guide July 2008

Barcelona events listings provided by www.athome-barcelona.com
Barcelona apartments for rent in the city centre. Our apartment rentals are perfect for your self-catering holiday in Barcelona.

Showing until September 21 at MNAC is the exhibition Duchamp, Man Ray, Picabia which features over 300 pieces by three of the most important artists of the 20th century. Organised by MNAC in collaboration with the Tate Modern of London, the exhibition explores the main themes these artists pursued throughout their lives, and the passion all three had for the game of chess, among other things. A multi-faceted show of paintings, photography, objects and film, it features some of the most famous works of art of the last century including Duchamp's Large Glass and Fountain, and Man Ray's Rayographs.

Now in its second week, the Barcelona summer arts festival, Grec, has one of its most varied programmes for years. With a selection of theatre, dance, music and circus, the 32nd edition features Panorama UK which highlights performing arts in Britain and finishes with a special performance of Requiem by Mozart on August 2nd. As always, the Teatre Grec located in Montjuic is the hub around which the festival revolves, but there are many other venues involved, including CCCB, MACBA, the gorgeous (and unmissable) Palau de la Musica, and Fundacio Miro. Full listings of all events can be found at www.barcelonafestival.com

July is also the month for Summercase, a music festival that features some of the best indie and alternative acts on the planet, once more hosted in the Parc Forum. The line-up this year includes The Breeders, Foals, Magnetic Fields, Grinderman, Interpol, Kaiser Chiefs, Kings of Leon, Mogwai, Maximo Park, 2 Many Djs, as well as veterans like Primal Scream, The Stranglers, and Edwyn Collins. Or perhaps you'd like to watch a pudgy multi-millionaire property developer snarl about anarchy? If so, don't miss the irrlevant Sex Pistols cashing in once again. It kicks off on July 18th and finishes the night after. Tickets and info are available at www.summercase.com

B-Estival returns for it's third year, and has added another venue to complement the concerts held at the Plaça Mayor in Poble Espanyol, the Espacio Movistar now relocated to Zona Universitaria. A very eclectic line-up includes Canadian folkstress Loreena McKennitt, popsters the B-52s, soulsters Macy Gray and Erykah Badu, African-inspired jazzsters Gerald Toto, Richard Bona, Lokua Kanza, and bluesman Johnny winter. Running from the 4th until the 26th, full details can be found at www.b-estival.com

There's plenty of other live music events to choose from at venues throughout the city this month. The visitors include Stereophonics, Juliette & The Licks, Suzanne Vega, Lenny Kravitz, Duffy, Kevin Johansen, Tom Waits, Skye, Toto, Whitesnake, Joan Baez, and Black Gandhi. As usual, everything you need to know can be found at www.barcelonarocks.com

Still showing at the CCCB is an exhibition titled Magnum - 10 Sequences. The exhibition's curators asked 10 Magnum Agency photographers of various ages and different documentary photography backgrounds to evoke the influence cinema has had on their imagination. The result is this selection of ten original works, both photographs and multimedia installations, in which the photographers express the influence a specific film director, film or shot has had on their psyche and work. For more info visit www.cccb.org

Until July 20th at Espai 13 at the Fundación Miró, there's a chance to see a show entitled ¡Kawaii! Japó Ara - curated by Hélène Kalmachter - consists of 5 exhibitions by young Japanese artists whose work paints a portrait of modern-day Japanese society. The projects by Aya Takano, Erina Matsui, Chiho Aoshima, Tomoko Sawada and Kowei Nawa - four women and one man between the ages of 23 and 33 - reflect on tradition and modernity, social and economic problems and the search for an identity through paintings, drawings, sculptures, animated films, photography and installations.

The event of the year for movie buffs has to be the annual outdoor film festival held in Montjuic, Sala Montjuic, running throughout the month of July. Get there early for an evening picnic and enjoy live music before the main event, which this year includes classics such as Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid by Sam Pekinpah and The Front Page by Billy Wilder, recent crackers like Eastern Promises by David Cronenberg, or Oscar winners Once by John Carney and The Lives of Others by Florian Henckel v. Donnersmarck. There is also a chance to see the wonderful silent classic The General by Buster Keaton, which will be accompanied live by the Liceu Orchestra. Screenings are on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and start at 8.30, and tickets and a full schedule are available at www.salamontjuic.com

The contents of this feed may be used by anyone, anywhere so long as www.athome-barcelona.com is given the proper credit. Should anyone have any event they feel is worth including, please contact us at marketing at athome-barcelona dot com and we will be happy to oblige.
